Plumbing Trivia

How much do you know about your home’s plumbing? Well, here at AAA Service we know a lot about plumbing, including some interesting trivia.

Clean the Screen Inside the End of the Faucet (The Aerator) Every Few Months

The hot water handle is on the left side of the faucet for a reason. When water was first brought indoors, it was all cold water pumped by hand. Because most people were right-handed that’s where the pump handle was placed. When hot water became available, there was only one place to put the other handle—on the left-hand side of the sink.

The part of the faucet that usually needs to be replaced is the washer.

Hard water can damage plumbing because high levels of calcium and magnesium cause scale to build up inside pipes, faucets, water heaters, washing machines, and dishwashers.

Faucets with Aerated Flow Restrictors Help Conserve Water

The flush lever is located on the left side of the toilet tank because of early indoor toilets with pull chains. Chains were pulled with the right hand then and stayed the same when modern flush mechanisms were put in place.

Use a soft cloth moistened with vinegar, rubbing alcohol or glass cleaner to shine chrome faucets.

Insulating exposed hot-water pipes with foam or fiberglass sleeves means you can lower your water heater’s thermostat and save on energy costs.

A faucet that drips one drop of water per second can waste up to 100 gallons of water in a week.

A cheap and easy way to clean a toilet is to drop two Alka-Seltzer tablets in the bowl; wait 20 minutes then brush and flush.

A lemon rind works wonders on tarnished brass or copper faucets.
