Ensure Adequate Ventilation
Ventilation is key in the bathroom. When you use the shower (or your sink for a long time), steam is inevitable. The steam then sticks to the walls, floor, counter, and pretty much every other surface. Even though the steam itself dies down when the shower is over, the moisture lingers.
Proper ventilation will make sure the condensation dries as quickly as possible and reduce the chances of mold growth. This usually comes in the form of an exhaust fan in your bathroom. If you don’t have one, open any windows in the bathroom to increase airflow.
Keep it Clean
Cleaning is a great way to prevent mold from growing or getting out of control. Make sure to clean corners, empty spaces, or hard-to-reach areas, since these will be the most likely to inspire mold.
Use all-purpose cleaners regularly in the bathroom to prevent the buildup of grime and dirt. Regularly clean any space that could hold moisture or be difficult to dry. Even if there is some mold present, it’s easier to clean a spot than an entire bathroom.
Cycle Out Linens
An often-overlooked location of mold growth is your towels and other linens. Not only do they catch the steam created by a hot shower, but you also use them to hold onto the water you used on your hands and body!
If your towels get used often and don’t have a lot of time to dry out in between, it only compounds the amount of moisture left behind. This is an ideal situation for mold, so if you’ve noticed that your towels start to smell, it may be time to change them out.
