Tankless Water Heaters vs. Traditional Water Heaters

A water heater is an essential system in any home. Without a water heater, you would not be able to properly wash your clothes or dishes, comfortably bathe, cook, or complete a number of other tasks.

If the water heater in your home is no longer working correctly or is getting old, it may be time for a replacement. You may also be in the market for a new water heater if you are renovating a property with an outdated system. Whatever reason you have for seeking a new water heater, you may be feeling overwhelmed by the process of choosing the right model for your needs.

There are two main types of water heaters: Traditional water heaters, which operate using a tank, and tankless water heaters. Determining how both types of water heaters work and understanding the pros and cons of each system is one of the first steps to making a decision on your new water heater.

How Do They Work?

Although both tankless water heaters and traditional water heaters achieve a similar purpose of warming your home’s water supply, they each do this in significantly different ways.

Traditional water heaters work by holding water in a tank and heating it. When a shower is turned on or a washing machine is in use, hot water is pulled from the existing supply in the tank.

Tankless water heaters clearly do not operate in the same way as traditional water heaters, because they do not have a tank. Instead, cold water enters the system and is heated before traveling through the pipes for use in a shower, sink, or appliance.

Pros of Tankless Water Heaters and Traditional Water Heaters

These days, tankless water heaters are often the water heater of choice. Because this type of water heater does not rely on the hot water available in a tank, they are able to provide water on demand. This also allows for energy conservation, and as a result, less costly operation.

Although tankless water heaters are preferred by many, traditional water heaters do have some benefits as well. The main draw to traditional water heaters is the price — they are generally less expensive to purchase, initially, than tankless water heaters (however, it is important to remember that they usually end up costing more to operate).

Cons of Tankless Water Heaters and Traditional Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters are generally more expensive up front than traditional water heaters. This is a reason that many people are at first hesitant to choose a tankless water heater.

Unfortunately, the lower initial cost of traditional water heaters does not often translate into the operation of this type of unit. They are generally more expensive to operate and use more energy than tankless water heaters. Another downside is that with a traditional water heater, your supply of hot water is limited to whatever is stored in the tank. You may need to wait for hot water to be available before you can use it.
