What type of pipes do you have?
If you know the kind of pipes in your home, you can make a guess about their lifespan. Galvanized steel is less durable than copper. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) will last almost indefinitely, but polybutylene is very fragile.
How old is the house?
Copper piping usually lasts about 50 years. Galvanized steel may start to corrode after 20 years but could last up to 50 years as well. If your home is more than 50 years old and has all-original piping, it may be time for a change.
Is there lead in your pipes?
Lead was used in the early 1900s. These pipes last for a century or more, but there are health risks associated with lead in drinking water. If you live in an old house, you can test your water for lead and have your pipes replaced if any is found.
Has your water quality suffered?
Lead isn’t the only contaminant that can leech into your drinking water. Water with a high mineral content may be a sign that your pipes are corroding and need to be replaced.
What type of soil do you have?
Some types of soil are highly reactive with copper piping. This can reduce the lifespan of your pipes substantially. If you’re not sure, you can ask your plumber whether you live in an area with reactive soil. Your neighbors will likely have had the same problem.
