How to Remove Your Window Air Conditioner

Well, Colorado, the cooling season is almost over and fall is right around the corner. This means it is time to take out those bulky window air conditioners and batten down the hatches. While this task might seem simple, there is a right and wrong way to remove and store your window cooling unit.

Step 1 – Prep For Removal

You should start the process by turning off and unplugging your window unit. Once this is done, you can start removing the device’s front cover as it is displayed in your owner’s manual. Some require the use of a screwdriver but most will pop right out.

Step 2 – Remove the Padding

If you are smart, you packed your window unit in with some insulation to lock-in that cold air. Properly removing this insulation is also important and we are going to tell you how to go about doing that. You may want to have your hammer handy in case you have to pry the insulation off of the unit or the wall. Be careful when you go to do this, you don’t want that very heavy air conditioner coming down on your floors or your foot! Examine the insulation you have removed and check for holes or rips. If it passes the eye test, you can go ahead and pack it away for use next year.

Step 3 – Remove the Unit

Before you tackle this task, you’ll want to head down to the local hardware store and get some gloves. After you do that, you can enlist the help of a partner because this isn’t a job you want to do alone. Once you are prepped, go ahead and remove the unit to a place that you have designated for it every year.

Step 4 – Store It Properly

This designated space you have chosen should be flat on the ground and safe from objects that could fall off of shelves. You spent a lot of money on it and you would hate to see that go to waste because of some careless storage.

Now that the cooling season is over and your unit is safe and tucked away, it is time to get your furnace prepared for winter. The good news is, AAA Service is currently offering a $79 furnace maintenance special that you can’t afford to miss out on!
