The heat is on and we all want to stay cool and comfortable during the hottest months of the year! If your current central air conditioning unit isn’t working as efficiently as it used to and the humidity is creeping in causing a “bad hair day,” GASP!, it may be time for a replacement or upgrade.
Not sure what to do? Read on for some insight and “keep your cool” this summer season!
Debating the Ductwork
If you already have ducts in your home, a new replacement unit can easily be connected to your existing ones. However, if your ducts are old, have them inspected for leaks to ensure they will not offset the efficiency of your new unit.
Depending on your budget and needs, you can opt for a ductless air conditioning system if your old ducts aren’t in great shape and your budget doesn’t allow you to replace them.
How Old is Your Unit?
If you have an old dinosaur of a unit, you may notice that you have higher energy bills. While your old unit may somewhat be cooling your house down, you’re most likely throwing money out the window.
Upgrading to a new unit that’s more energy-efficient (and cost-effective) will save you money in the long run over the next decade.
Size of the Unit
The size of your unit (and proper installation of it) is one of the main factors in how efficient your unit will run.
- If the unit you choose is too small, it may not be able to keep the proper temperatures to keep your home cool and comfortable.
- A unit that’s too large will not be able to remove moisture from the air and you will have humid conditions — hence the “bad hair day” fiasco we mentioned above!
Is it Efficient?
Most new central air conditioning units on the market today are energy efficient — but some are more effective than others. When purchasing a new unit, make sure you do your homework first.
- Read the energy guide labels and look for the Energy Star.
- Find a central air conditioner with a good SEER (seasonal efficiency ratio) rating, as well.
