Causes
As the Denver temperature falls, the risk for frozen pipes only increases. As water runs through your pipes to say your sink or bathtub, it is not likely that it is going to freeze. But when you turn off the water, it is going to sit in the pipe for a period of time with no flow, and that is where the problem lies. It works the same way as it would if you were to leave a standing glass of water out in the winter.
Prevention
Insulation, Insulation Insulation! There are areas of your home like the basement that might not be exposed to heat the same way the rest of the home is. This is where you have to take extra caution and wrap pipes with insulation. It is simple to do with exposed plumbing, but we can assist you with plumbing on the interior of the walls. As for the outside of your home, you need to prepare your hose and outdoor plumbing for the chill. Before the first freeze, your hose should be disconnected, drained and the valve for outdoor water should be turned off. Neglecting to do this could cause a pressure build-up and have a negative effect on your entire system.
