Troubleshooting Your Heater When It’s Blowing Cold Air

Has your heater been blowing cold air instead of warm? You’re not alone. This is a common occurrence for many homeowners and usually has an easy fix.

Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue and get to the root cause of your dilemma. Our AAA Service team is here to guide you through what to look at and what might be causing the problem with your heater.

Check The Thermostat Settings

The first thing you should do when your heater is blowing cold air is check your thermostat settings. Make sure that the it is set to “heat” and that the temperature setting is above room temperature.

If the thermostat is programmed correctly, but your heater still isn’t working, try adjusting the temperature up or down a few degrees and see if that helps. If it doesn’t, then you may need to call in a professional for help.

Check The Filter

Another possible cause of cold air from your heater could be a dirty filter. If your filter hasn’t been changed in a while, it could be clogged with dirt and debris, restricting airflow and preventing your furnace from producing hot air. To prevent this, replace or clean your filter regularly (typically every three months). If you have an older system, you may need to change or clean the filter more often than that.

Clean The Vents And Registers

If you have blocked vents or registers, they could prevent hot air from getting into your home properly. Ensure all the vents are open and free of obstructions so air can flow freely through them. If necessary, vacuum away any dust or debris from around the vents as well so they stay clean and clear.
