Do These 6 Things Before Relying on Your AC

Do These 6 Things Before Relying on Your AC

Apr 15

We enjoy our mild spring weather but make no mistake, the heat is coming. Summers in Denver can be real scorchers.

Take the following steps to ensure your AC system is up to the challenge of getting you comfortably through a mile-high heatwave.

Check the Air Filter

Your central air system’s filter is your first-line defense against pollen, dust and airborne pollutants. A clogged filter forces your central air unit to work hard, and all that extra effort will be reflected in your energy bills. Even worse, an overworked HVAC system is more likely to breakdown. That’s the last thing you want during a heat spell.

To ensure your central air unit operates at peak efficiency, change out the filter every 30 days. Also, consider upgrading to a whole-home purification system to improve your indoor air quality.

Check the Condensate Line

Your AC system generates a lot of water through the process of removing humidity. All that water drains through the condensate line, which can become clogged with fungus and debris. Mold and water damage is the result if left unchecked.

Every three to six months, pour a small amount of water and bleach down the drain line to prevent build-up.

Inspect Ductwork

If working properly, your ducts will distribute air evenly throughout your home. However, gaps and holes can cost you comfort and money. The EPA estimates that ducts lose 20 to 30% of conditioned air through leaks in the ductwork. That’s a lot of cool air going to waste! Have your ductwork professionally inspected.

Upgrade Your Thermostat

Smart thermostats automatically adjust your family’s schedule, throttling down to energy-saving mode when no one is home. They can be operated remotely via your smartphone, so you can keep tabs on your HVAC system’s performance while on your summer vacation.

Consider the Age of Your Unit

While the life expectancy of an AC unit will vary, most last between 10 and 20 years. If your system is pushing two decades, consider upgrading to a more modern unit. Today’s newest models are more durable and consume less substantially less energy.

Schedule Preventive Maintenance

Maintenance is the single most important aspect of keeping your AC unit in good condition. During a spring tune-up, a technician will clean the coils, lubricate moving parts, and calibrate your thermostat, among other things to keep your central air system operating at peak efficiency during the demanding heat of summer.
