4 Spring Maintenance Must-Dos

Spring is a time for new beginnings, which is why so many of us tackle home improvement projects this time of year. Spring cleaning, of course, is top priority, but don’t neglect to give your home comfort systems some attention, too.

For a safer, more efficient home, include the following items on your to-do list.

1. Inspect the Attic for Adequate Insulation, Ventilation

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends an equivalent of R-30 insulation in your attic. You should check to see if you have that much and add some insulation if necessary. The thickness that you will need to reach R-30 will depend on the type of insulation you have, but generally, about 12 inches is sufficient.

If your insulation is matted down, consider adding a fresh layer to help keep your home cool this summer. You should also make sure that your attic space is well ventilated to let the extreme summer heat escape.

2. Schedule an HVAC Tune-Up

You should have your HVAC equipment serviced by a qualified HVAC service professional at least once a year. Regular maintenance of your central air system will keep it running efficiently, reliably, and help you to save money on your utility bills. Also, a preventative tune-up will make your equipment last longer and prevent untimely and unexpected breakdowns.

3. Attend to Leaks

If you have any leaks around your house, you should have them fixed as soon as possible to prevent a major problem. Water is powerful. Even a small leak can cause significant damage.

Check around the dishwasher, washing machine, and water heater, paying close attention to the hose connections. Hoses become dry and brittle with age. Cracks lead to leaks. Also, check for moisture below your sinks and around toilets.

4. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Spring is also an excellent time of the year to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Most of these devices have a test button that you hold down until the device beeps a predetermined number of times. You should also replace your batteries annually.
